Americans’ internet affinity has driven the Online Grocery Sales industry for much of the past decade, and while revenue fell during the recession, performance has not been severely marred over the past five years. Broadband connections have increased at 16.4% per year on average over the five years since 2007, says IBISWorld industry analyst Nikoleta Panteva. Meanwhile, the number of mobile internet connections has grown at an average annual rate of 59.9%, underpinning demand for online retailing services. As a result, industry revenue has grown at an average annual rate of 1.2% to $ 6.0 billion. Despite weak performance during the recession, IBISWorld expects an 8.3% jump in 2012 alone, exemplifying consumers’ tastes for online grocery shopping.

In 2008 and 2009, the Online Grocery Sales industry suffered revenue declines of 2.6% and 4.1%, respectively. During these years, per capita disposable income weakened and shoppers opted for lower-priced items. Some even shied away from internet grocery shopping to avoid delivery charges. Industry profit (i.e. earnings before interest and tax) also declined as a result, bottoming out in 2009. On the back of improving incomes and rising food prices, industry profit has grown in 2012. External competition from traditional brick-and-mortar grocery stores remains a threat, however. Operators compete on price, product selection, time savings and customer service, adds Panteva. If online grocers do not price their products competitively or offer products not easily found in physical supermarkets, they risk losing business to traditional stores. The industry has a low level of concentration and is highly fragmented. Many online grocery retailers are small- to medium-size private establishments that operate on a state and regional level and serve niche markets. Although these retailers offer similar products and services, low industry concentration stems partly from the diversity of regions covered by industry operators, including major player Peapod.

The five years to 2017 promise strong growth for the Online Grocery Sales industry. Driven by declining unemployment and increased internet usage, industry revenue is forecast to grow in 2017. Falling unemployment will decrease consumers’ free time, making internet food shopping more attractive. Moreover, as people return to work, their incomes will grow, further stimulating industry demand. Input price increases will also be easier to pass on to consumers, allowing for profit growth in the five years to 2017. How do you identify and uncover a niche market?

So before we identify techniques to assist in searching for and researching niche markets, lets first put in place a definition of what a niche market is. Many people think that if a subject is very popular and many people are looking to acquire services or products in that area then this is a niche market.

So let’s discuss what this would mean in essence, it would ultimately mean that thousands or millions of companies who sell using affiliate or online marketing techniques would start to create products that fit into this super popular area.

Online Marketing – Marketing budget constraints or SEO?

Okay so no problem with that, that’s just how the free market works right?, but what if all of these companies and product providers created websites and drove major traffic streams to those sites, through sometimes expensive marketing budgets. The result is that although the product is probably still very popular and sought after, so is the demand to deliver it.

Now that means for a smaller player to try to compete in these markets that individual or company would have to either use extremely powerful Search Engine Optimization techniques, or compete through the various marketing systems that are available. Even then if either of these methods were deployed, unless you fully understood how to do your own Search Engine Optimization, or had a large marketing budget it would still be difficult to compete.

So is there another option, there are certainly other ways for the smaller affiliate or online marketing companies to compete and one of the ways is to have an understanding of how niche markets operate and what the best definition for the niche market is.

Online Marketing – Definition of the ‘Niche’

My definition of a niche market would be a product or service that is extremely popular and that is sought after but when customers search for it they are not finding strong deliverables for that product or service. This is quite obviously different to the terms that several people use when discussing potential niche markets. Moreover if the niche is defined first and the niche is researched, you can then go and find literally thousands of products that will be a fit into that niche area.

Online Marketing – Affiliate network

Often people come at this from completely the wrong way around, they product the product first sometimes at a considerable cost and then go looking to see if a) it is popular and b) what kind of competition exists around this product or service.

With many affiliate networks and companies like ClickBank, commission junction and PLR products being very widely available the creation of a product that will sell is actually not the issue.

You just need to identify the niche and then go and find the product from any one of the companies that will pay great affiliate commissions for assisting them to market and sell their product, and then you can start to make money quickly.

Online Marketing – Niche identification

Whether you are an affiliate or a digital product vendor the first step for me should always be to research your potential market using keyword research, there are many tools that allow you to research keywords and many of them are now free. So why not just identify 5 – 10 keywords that you would use to find your desired market, up to this point much of the time you are just using an educated guess at what might be popular. Then with your potential market and a list of potential estimated keywords and keyword phrases, you can start your keyword research.

Niche Identification – Online marketing keyword research

Now find one of the free keyword research tools and start to research these keywords and the keyword phrases, this will start to give you great statistics about how many times these keywords were searched on in the major search engines.

Once you have this you know how much demand there is for that product, also in most cases you will find other great keywords that could be used in any sort of campaign if you should decide to peruse this product area.

Online marketing – Drilling down and identifying the niche area

Now most people think that’s it you can go out and find your product and start to actively market that product, alas that is not the case and you will in most cases have to do more keyword research later.

The reason for this is that you may well find that the subject area you have chosen does not at first look popular, but on closer examination if you drill down and go looking for a smaller sub-set of that product area, you do indeed find a profitable nice.

An example of this might be you go looking at the subject area of ‘Hypnosis’ but because ‘Hypnosis’ is too generic and the area does not look very niche, when you look closer in turns out that ‘Learn Hypnosis’ is indeed a niche market area. So I guess we need to be careful when doing our research to ensure we have been thorough enough about the subject area when doing initial analysis.

Online marketing – Analyzing the niche competition

Now we know how much demand the potential market has we need to start looking at the amount and level of competition in this area. This is a fairly large area because you really need to understand firstly how many sites there are out there supplying this product and then you need to understand a) how good the top sites are b) their page rank c) website specifics like privacy policy and opt in process etc.

You can easily do this by going to one of the top search engines and searching for a particular subject area, in search engines like Google, here you will find a number that defines how many of those sites are actually delivering products/services around your potential chosen market.

These sites will be made up of affiliate’s promoting ClickBank and commission junctions type of digital online products, it could be digital product vendors who have created products them selves, it could also be small/medium and large companies. You need to know how many people are supplying quality products into your potential market place. It is only at this point can you start to assess how whether your product is niche or not.

The next step is to identify and find the really serious players, again there are commands available that you can use to query the search engines to find out which of these sites are using the actual ‘hot keywords’ in their domain names to promote their deliverable into the niche market space. One way you can do Niche marketing is to divide the number of total websites that have websites aligned to the potential product area by the number of sites that actually use good principles to promote the ‘hot keyword’ in their domain name. These sites will be the serious players the ones that understand exactly how to market their products correctly into the niche area.

If there are just too many of these sites then that is a good indication that the market is not in fact niche, although it may be extremely popular in terms of demand.
